Does time and money get in the way of your skincare routine? Your skin doesn’t have to suffer because of your schedule, or wallet!
Here are 3 simple things you can do to kick-start your skincare routine and make it more effective in no time, and at relatively low cost!
1. Quit washing your face in the morning.
If your face feels tight after cleansing, or always dry, try washing only at night (BEFORE you run out to buy a new moisturizer or cleanser). After adolescence, most people don’t need to wash their face two times per day, which can actually contribute to dry and dehydrated skin. Washing at night is better than the morning since your skin is dirtier from makeup, oil buildup, dirt and pollution. If your skin is extremely oily, washing 1 time per day can also help! You may be over cleansing, which can increase oil production to compensate for what you’re scrubbing away. Instead of cleanser in the morning, just splash water on your face (or use a toner) and apply a moisturizer, as usual.
2. Mix an exfoliating powder into your cleanser 2-3 times per week.
If time is an issue, skip the two-step process of cleansing and exfoliating — mix the two! Use a dry exfoliating powder like Graydon’s Superfood Mask + Scrub or Province Apothecary’s Regenerating + Stimulating Exfoliator. You can also use ground oats as a cheap, exfoliating alternative! Making time to exfoliate 2-3 times per week can do wonders for the skin. Exfoliating can increase cellular turnover (necessary for anti-aging!) and can help products penetrate better by clearing debris like dead, flaky skin.
3. Apply moisturizer on damp skin.
Have you ever poured water on a dry sponge? It doesn’t absorb and spills right off! Your skin acts the same way. When you apply moisturizing ingredients like serum, lotion, or oil onto damp skin, the existing moisture helps trap water on surface cells and acts as a barrier for moisture loss. It’s particularly important to apply oil on damp skin, which prevents it from sitting on top of the skin. Follow this tip and you will automatically make your moisturizer more effective without having to switch it!
